Whippets

General

The Whippet is a hound breed that originated in Great Britian. They were used to chase rabbits and provide entertainment in snap dog contests (racing down a straightaway to grab a rag waved by a guardian). Whippets love to relax for long hours and enjoying the role of a lovable companion. Whippets like a fenced yard to run around in. They can handle being in an apartment so long as they get enough exercise daily. They are also known for not barking often.

Health / Care

To those used to larger-framed, less agile breeds, a Whippet at a healthy weight may appear "skinny," but keeping your Whippet at the right weight throughout his life will increase his lifespan and prevent many orthopedic issues that are both painful and expensive to fix. They are an active breed, so they need regular exercise so long walks or time to run out all that energy is recommended. Just like with any dog, check ears often and clean as needed. Brushing teeth regularly with helps prevent teeth issues such as plaque and tartar buildup.

Whippets are prone to a few medical conditions: Mitral Valve Disease, gastric issues, and Von Willebrand Disease. We take every effort to make sure our dogs are healthy, tested, and free of ailments prior to breeding. We also recommend that you make sure they are up to date on all vaccines throughout their life.

Grooming

Whippets are minimal shedders. They have a short, smooth coat that needs minimal care. We recommend bathing every two to three weeks as needed. As stated before, check ears every week to insure they are clean and clean as needed. Brush teeth at least 3 times a week. Nail trimming regularly is also recommended to prevent overgrown nails which will cause your dog discomfort.

Training

Whippets are peaceful indoors and save their energy for vigorous running sessions, ideally in a big, securely fenced area. Due to their intelligence, agility, mischievous nature, and ability to jump and climb, young Whippets must be safely contained when left unattended. It is advised to socialize puppies early and enroll them in puppy training sessions to help them develop into well-mannered, well-adjusted adults.
